PALEOCLIMATOLOGY This science was developed in 1992. It has demonstrated the occurrence of fluctuations or changes in the regions of the Sahara and the Nile valley. The living conditions of the populations were affected by these changes. Between 10 000 and 5 500 BC, the North of Africa was subjected to rainfall that varied in importance depending on region, in some areas creating huge lakes. A gradual decline in rainfall brings about desertification. This begins above the 22nd degree North (at the latitude of Abu Simbel, near the Second Cataract), focussing on the Nile valley. Between 4800 and 3000 BC, it continues on a North-South axis, still beginning at the 22nd parallel, and reaching Khartoum in the first centuries AD. To learn more, click here (annexe 3)
