THE CONTEMPORARIES

The year 1969 marks a very important step in the Sudanese archaeology with the agreement for cultural collaboration between France and Sudan. The Ministry of the French Foreign Affairs creates the French Section under the Direction of the French Service of the Sudanese Antiquities (SFDAS), future National Corporation for Antiquities and Museums (NCAM). This permanent mission has some very concrete goals:

- digging seasons with topographical survey

- laboratory works and documentation

- training of some Sudanese archaeologists

- salvage diggings because of the world in constant evolution

The first persons in charge were, André Vila, Francis Geus and Jacques Reinold.

In the years 1970, the expansion of the agricultural lands needs to survey very special areas. This mission is successful. At El-Kadada, it is found some unknown archaeological objects confirming some very important Neolithic communities with special ceramics.

Today, more than twenty international teams collaborate with the National Corporation for Antiquities and Museums. The Northern State is studied at Sai by the French Archaeological Mission and at Soleb, by the Sedeinga Archaeological Research Unity and the French Oriental Archaeological Institute in Cairo (IFAO). Under the care of the Foreign Universities and Museums, the American, British, Canadian, Spanish, French, Italian, Polish, Swiss Scientifics ... work all over Sudan.

The discoveries of the second half of the XX Century confirm that Sudan is part of the human history. Created by the two Niles, the country has generated according to the former Sudanese Ambassador near UNESCO, Nureldin Satti: "something immutable in the Sudanese story, the legitimate child from the union between the eternal river, the equatorial forest and the Saharan sands under the reproving eye of the tropical hell"
